Q&A WITH ANNIE TEVELIN, FOUNDER OF SKINOWL

Meet Annie Tevelin, this is her story:

EG: What were you like as a girl?

AT: My parents always say that I was a “happy child.” There’s a joke that if a stranger was to come up to me, that I’d say, ‘Screw the candy, scoot over,” because of how much I loved to talk to people (especially whenever someone asked my mother’s age). I also remember being shy and unsure of myself in situations that forced me to be inauthentic. I spent my summers at a sleep-away camp in the mountains, called Camp Louise, and it changed my life and who I was as a person on a cellular level. It taught me how to be comfortable in my skin in many ways. I got through the school year so that I could get to camp.

EG: Describe the journey you took to get to where you are now.

AT: I could answer this question in a lot of ways. To me, I think my life has been one big lesson to date. If I wasn’t a film major, I never would have moved to LA. If I wasn’t working in the film industry, I never would have shadowed makeup artists and fallen in love with the beauty business. I have experienced great loss in my life, such as divorce, but with that pain came the ability to live the life I want to live and feel the way I want to feel. I didn’t want to stay in a painful place. I wanted to explore what life could feel like after the storm. I like thinking that every step, every decision, every yes and every no has gotten me here. Even in times of hardship, I know something good can come from experiencing challenges. With concern to SkinOwl, if I had never had cystic acne, and seen such a huge “acne product” void in the industry (ahem, acne products that work) I never would have started SkinOwl. SkinOwl was the answer to that void and a way for me to share my story and results with the world. The collateral beauty of life is everything.

EG: Describe a day in your life.

AT: I wake up around 7 AM. I walk my dog and make breakfast. I try really hard not to check my email until I finish breakfast, but if I’m honest, it’s a work in progress. My pup is usually tired after his walk, so that’s my time to go to the gym or get in a workout of some kind. The rest of the day, until about 7 PM is spent working. Non-stop. I break for lunch, but it’s meetings, phone calls, and emails until about 7 PM. Then, I cook dinner with my boyfriend or we’ll go out and try a new restaurant in the area or watch one of the many shows we’re obsessed with on Apple TV. One thing is for certain – everyday I need and want to dedicate time to the most important things in my life. My boyfriend/family. My dog. My business. And myself.

EG: Where do you see yourself in five years?

AT: With a child or two. Married. Living in Los Angeles or another country with my family, experiencing and drinking up another culture. I think that’s so good for kids. To know their world is bigger than themselves, and especially BIGGER than LA. I see SkinOwl as a multi-media lifestyle brand, with a podcast, skincare line, and focus on helping, training, and educating people about their skincare and selfcare.

EG: What is the best advice that you have ever received?

AT: Don’t put off anything that takes less than 20 seconds. AND, in the words of Conan O’ Brien when his late-night network show went off the air, “Work hard. Be kind. And amazing things will happen.”
